2021 Illinois Dairy Technology Tour Features Virtual On-Farm Tour

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Milk Producers Association (IMPA) and University of Illinois Dairy Extension will host a virtual on-farm tour of Hunter Haven Farms followed by a live Q & A panel discussion.

The guided virtual tour will be led by farmer Scott Brenner and Drs. Phil Cardoso and Derek Nolan from the University of Illinois. The on-farm tour will highlight a methane digester, cover crops, forages and share insights on succession planning.

Hunter Haven Farms is on the cutting edge of digester technology. Participants will learn how a biodigester creates natural gas from cow manure, reduces heating costs and produces a comfortable byproduct used for bedding for the cows. The climate-smart process of the digester captures methane gas produced from manure and converts it to energy used elsewhere on the farm.

Hunter Havens Farms was established in 1976 and has steadily expanded its herd of Registered Holsteins. With new construction over the years, the dairy facility has a capacity of approximately 900 cows.

“These tours are an excellent way for our farmers to get a behind-the-scenes look at the latest innovations, technologies and management practices on dairy farms throughout Illinois,” said Tasha Bunting, IMPA manager. “Many of these new technologies and cutting-edge practices are improving productivity and sustainability for dairy farmers.”

A live panel discussion will follow the virtual tour. The panel will feature farmer Scott Brenner, Dr. Phil Cardoso and Dr. Derek Johnson. The panel will answer viewer questions and discuss the latest in energy efficiency programs on dairy farms.

The virtual event will be held live via Zoom on July 1 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

There is no fee to attend this year’s virtual tour and online pre-registration is required. Once registered, you will receive the Zoom link. If you are unable to view live, please note that the recording will be made available shortly after the event at https://www.illinoismilk.org/.
